Another aspect, myself being a creative artist and the writer of the story and screenplay of a particular film, I think the best casting director for that film would be me and no one else. Hence one aspect is that we cannot afford to have casting directors. Hollywood and Bollywood cinema has casting directors. Isuru also had the perfect looks to be cast as a police officer in ‘GinimalPokuru’. I knew their acting capabilities earlier. Chulakshi and Isuru both are dedicated artistes. Isuru who did the main role in my film ‘President Super Star’ was known to me as an actor of substance. Chulakshi has already proved her mettle as an actress and she was the perfect one to cast in this challenging role. Tell us also about Chulakshi Ranathunga and Isuru Lokuhettiaracchchi?Ī. The balance fifty per cent lies within acting talent and auditioning. For me as a film director, fifty per cent counts for the looks of a fresher. Hence I auditioned her for the character. While auditioning I discovered her acting talent. I thought her looks tally with the image that was in my mind for a particular character in the film. She is a model who came to see me with Chulakshi. Tell us about the new actress DirrufaSanaz in the film?Ī. With ‘GinimalPokuru’ we cater to this need. Hence film directors if they intend to indulge in making films must think of tactics to arouse the interest of particular segments of filmgoers to step into film halls. Hence having been left with the challenge of attracting potential Sinhala cinema lovers, I thought of making this film at this juncture. ‘Gini Mal Pokuru’ is based on a true story. Did you make this film as a marketing tactic to draw crowds to cinema halls in this pandemic-struck period?Ī. ‘GinimalPokuru’ has an adult theme and sensual scenes. ‘Yakada Pihatu’ cartoon story, novel, screenplay and direction of the film by the same name was done by me. ‘Wassane Sanda’ and ‘Yakada Pihatu’ were two novels I wrote. I had to think of the finer points of converting a screenplay into a motion picture. I did a study on my own to gather knowledge. I wrote a novel called ‘Yatagiyawa’ even before indulging in a creative drawing. From schooling days I used to write and also draw pictures. Writing a story, screenplay and also directing a film on that story is a hefty task. Many of Udayakantha’s films revolve around stories on discrimination against women in society and ‘GinimalPokuru’ too has a similar theme.ĭuring his busy schedule on publicity arrangements for his newest film, Udayakantha had a conversation with the Daily News T&C. Gini AviSaha Gini Keli, Rosa Wasanthe and YakadaPihatu being box office hits were three films he made with contrasting themes. His film ‘RajyaSevayaPinisai’ won 10 awards at the Presidential Award Ceremony 2000 including best screenplay and best direction.
